The concept of lifestyle simplicity...  It is not a huge stretch to get anyone to admit that life in America is now anything but simple.  Consumerism is motivated by commercials, lending impetus to buy, contemplating going into debt.  Sometimes even deciding to become debt free.  But all these and hundreds of other actions are influenced by consumerism.

It is absolute insanity to build a national economy on consumerism or debt.  In this short article I will focus on the mental damage done by an absence of simplicity, and by the feverish pace of consumerism.

Before the advent of TV, cars, and credit cards, most Americans lived a simpler life.  They had time to talk to their neighbors, to have friends over for iced tea, possibly to play a game of checkers or a card game.  They might stand in their front yard and watch the activity on their street.  They knew who their kids were playing with.  They also knew it was relatively safe in their area.  Their children were busy with physical activity. 

Since America has embraced consumerism whole-heartedly the simple life has all but vanished.  Have you ever noticed that when the electricity goes out the whole family converges in the same room and they all talk about the same thing?  That rarely happens even at dinner time.  Even if the family sits down all at the same time they are quite often not talking or making eye contact with each other.  Is the TV on?  The radio?  How about the stereo system?  Does anyone have head-phones or ear-plugs stuck in to drown out the conversation at the table?

Here is something to try.  Live a day without electric power.  Make sure your entire family is home when you pull the plug.  Turn off the phone.  Consider hiding the cell-phones as well.  No TV or radio.  Just conversation, study, or non-electronic board games.  Doing this will produce some remarkable results in your family.  Just try it.  You will be surprised.
