Sugar Substitutes -- Artificial Sweeteners and Natural Sweetenersby Arthur WarnierWhen was the last time you heard someone say, "You know, sugar is really bad for you." They told you the truth, sort of. Too much sugar is really bad for you. But the artificial sweeteners aka sugar substitutes such as Equal - aspartame, NutraSweet - aspartame, Sweet'N Low - saccharin, and Splenda - sucralose are even worse for you. Because sugar had become so overused, causing or exacerbating problems such as diabetes and overweight, some "geniuses" thought to develop sugar subsitutes. "Now, fatties, you can pig out with no problem!"
We have lived with natural sugars for millions of years without ill
effect, provided used in moderation.
Artificial sweeteners -- sugar substitutes -- are only a recent
addition to the diets of many.
Brought to you through the wonders of modern chemistry.
But, as we have learned, many, if not most, of the wonders of the
"food chemists", agricultural pesticide chemists, plastics chemists,
et al, have turned and bit us on the butt.
Whether or not used merely in moderation.
Sugar substitutes have been in existence for only a few
generations.
But, in that short span of human history, more than enough problems
with them have already been discovered, far surpassing those of sugar
itself, to motivate anyone not a complete idiot, to...
Dangerous Artificial Sugar Substitutes
Natural Sugar Substitutes -- Natural SweetenersZerose and ZSweet (Erythritol Based)These erythritol based sweeteners don't lead to gassiness, bloating, or have a laxative effect, and they are calorie free like sorbitol, maltitol, and xylitol. They are not quite as sweet as sugar, so you need to use half again to two-thirds more. Xagave (Agave)Xagave is from the agave plant. It is usually sold in syrup or "nectar" form. Agave is not calorie-free; it contains 56 calories per tablespoon, vs. sugar at 50 calories per tablsepoon. But, it is sweeter, so you can use less. Agave is less likely to cause erratic blood sugar level swings, but is cautioned for those with irritable bowel syndrome or who have heart disease risk. PureVia and Truvia (Stevia)Stevia is from the stevia plant. Stevia extracts are up to 300 times sweeter than sugar. Since it is so powerful, it is often "cut" with erythritol. And, since stevia is so concentrated, need to consult recipe conversion charts online. For more information about stevia, see the article Stevia: Sweeter than Sugar -- and Healthier.
